Deputy Leader: Simon or Tonio ?

Good Evening

A difficult decision lies ahead for us PN councillors. Choosing the Deputy Leader for our Party.  It is a decision at a very crucial period in the history of the PN when it is facing an impending election with polls showing a blatant negative attitude to PN.  It is therefore crucial that this person gives a vision of continuity and change to this Party.

Our country needs the PN because with the PN we have moved forward as a country. With PN we have stability.  With PN we have avoided the social unrest other countries are facing today with massive unemployment and gross economic problems . This week Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece, and Poland have faced  protests from their citizens because of  the austerity measures imposed on them which they cannot bear any longer. We have avoided all this thanks to the PN. Important decisions taken years ago which might have been unpopular, which required foresight and also with timely economic adjustments during the 2008 crises, are now helping us through these difficult years. At the same time our country risks losing all this in a few months time .
Change for the sake of change .
Let's 'try' MLP and then we will see what happens.
PN has been too long in government so we need a change .

The thing is PN has changed. It is now a different PN from that in 2008. This election will also offer a 'Change'. A step forward in its glorious history. Let's take a look:

Two candidates with an impressive track record .
Two candidates of the same age (Simon born on 20/3/69 whilst Tonio on the 5/5/69)
Two candidates well versed in their respective fields. One with a Masters in international law and in European studies the other with  a BA(Hons) in Accountancy.
Two candidates instrumental in bring about political change.  Simon is the person who was responsible for winning the EU referendum and taking an active part in the EU core negotiating group and now active in the European Parliament. Tonio masterminding Malta's entry in the Eurozone and keeping with the Maastricht criteria for this. Showing extreme economic prowess in the difficult years we have passed through with yearly budgets which yielded results even under severe duress.

I would have preferred them competing against their Labour counterparts then against themselves. In truth there would have been no competition at all. That is the stuff PN is made of. We need both of them to work side by side along with Lawrence Gonzi to win this election. Who of the two has that edge which could first and foremost influence the electorate to trust PN to continue managing this country? This answer is crucial not only for the PN but also for Malta.

Michael Gonzi

  1. I think you are so right when you say we need both of them. Sadly only one of them is within the parliamentary group right now and to me this is the crux of the issue. We need Simon as part of the parliamentary group and part of the leadership. Tonio Fenech has done a great job and is also needed but he is already there. The signal we need to send out to the electorate is that we are regenerating and having Simon there will send the strongest possible signal.
